Jerry Falwell's funeral is being held at Thomas Road Baptist Church as I write this entry. Liberty University and Lynchburg City law enforcement are expecting several thousand people to show up to pay their respects to Uncle Jerry, in what can only be described as a rock star-like tribute(More than 33,000 viewed his body while it lay in state this past week). Since the church seats a "paltry" 6000, the overflow crowd is being sent up to LU where they can watch the service on the Jumbotrons set up in the basketball arena and the football stadium, which seat an additional 16,000 or so. And the local ABC affiliate, WSET, is broadcasting the service. There was a rumor that at least one former President might show up, but it was just that; a rumor. And Dubya decided to stay home, as well.
According to the station's website, people started lining up around Thomas Road Baptist Church as early as 3:00 AM this morning. For those of you who don't live here in Lynchburg (which is everyone), let me paint a small picture of where TRBC is located. Thomas Road is actually a narrow, two-lane street in the western part of town(not far from where I live, actually), and the church, itself, is located at the top of the hill(naturally) at the three-way intersection. This is still a residential neighborhood, with houses directly across the street from TRBC(one is owned by the mother of a family friend), despite unsuccessful attempts by Jerry and his peeps to buy up all the property. So you can imagine what the scene must have been like overnight. I certainly feel for those people; I would've been pissed.
I'll say this; I'm not venturing anywhere near either Thomas Road or Liberty Mountain today(not that they're regular stops, but you get my drift). The store where I pay my US Cellular bill is located at the base of the "mountain", so I'll just have to wait another day, I guess. Damn you, Jerry; damn you to Hell. Even in death, you're screwing with me.
OK, I'm getting off my
now.
